The Project
Masterhitch was approached to assist with the removal of a mooring dolphin at a port in Essex. The works were required to make way for quay expansion and allow larger ships to berth. Our role was to design and manufacture a bespoke steel framework that could be welded to the dolphin’s column, enabling a wire saw to operate effectively in cutting the structure into sections for removal.
The Completed Job
Masterhitch designed and manufactured a robust wire-sawing frame, along with a clamping frame for the wire saw wheels to be fitted at the base of the column by divers. The column measured 15 metres in length, most of which was below water, and was constructed from double-lined steel, concrete, and further steel reinforcement. Working with only 45 minutes of dive time per tide window, the bespoke frame was key in minimising underwater working time and maximising safety and efficiency. The structure was dismantled into segments weighing over 50 tonnes each, allowing the removal to be completed safely, on schedule, and within budget – another example of Masterhitch’s ability to deliver smart, effective solutions under challenging conditions.
